SB823-52310r.jpg

This specimen was lot 52310 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GIBRALTAR. Quart, 1861. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS Genuine--Spot Removed, Proof Details. An EXTREMELY RARE type as a proof, this example does exhibit some staining from the noted spot removals on the obverse, but nevertheless possesses surfaces that are extremely brilliant and flashy, with a delightful brown nature that yields hues of cobalt and violet. The impressive pedigree merely augments its appeal that much more. Ex: Arielle Collection, Part 2 (Baldwin's 86 - 5/2014) Lot # 157. Ex: A. L. T. McCammon Collection (Baldwin's 20 - 10/1999) Lot # 280. Ex: Fred Pridmore Collection, Part 1 (Glendining - 9/1981) Lot # 546." This type was struck for circulation in 1841-42. A few proofs (half quart, one quart and two quarts) were struck in 1861 for sale to collectors; these are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.
