This specimen was lot 52309 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GIBRALTAR. 2 Quarts, 1861. London Mint. Victoria. NGC PROOF-64 Brown. An enticing and VERY RARE proof issue, this near-Gem presents a rather deep chocolate brown appearance with glistening brilliance and a sharp strike." This type was struck for circulation in 1842. A few proofs (half quart, one quart and two quarts) were struck in 1860-61 for sale to collectors; these are rare.
