Steve Album Auction 55, lot 2888

This specimen was lot 2888 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Third Reich, AE reichspfennig, 1939-G, a superb lustrous example! PCGS graded MS65 RB." This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1936-40 during the early years of the Nazi regime in Germany. It was minted at Berlin ("A"), Vienna ("B"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G", shown here), and Hamburg ("J"). For a race of Aryan supermen, the Nazis were remarkably unimaginative coin designers and this type is quite dull. It was replaced by an even more boring zinc issue (KM 97) 1940-45.

Recorded mintage: 12,250,000.

Specification: 2.01 g, bronze, 17.43 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-89, J-361.
