Germany 1933-G 5 mark
This specimen was lot 911 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Third Reich, AR 5 reichsmark, Karlsruhe, 1933-G, commemorating the 450th Anniversary of Martin Luther's Birth, a lovely lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS63, ex Almer H. Orr III Collection. Martin Luther was a German priest, theologian, author, hymnwriter, professor, and Augustinian friar. Luther was the seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation, and his theological beliefs form the basis of Lutheranism. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western and Christian history." Altho technically an issue of Nazi Germany, the design makes no reference to the new regime and was probably prepared before Hitler took over. Though the size of a half dollar, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger five mark of the Weimar Republic such as the Goethe commemorative (Dav-974). This type was also minted at Munich (mintmark "D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Berlin ("A") and Hamburg ("J"). It was accompanied by a two mark (KM 79).
Recorded mintage: 12,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 13.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, .401 troy oz ASW.
