Germany 1933-D 5 mark
This specimen was lot 3049 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $510. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Third Reich, AR 5 reichsmark, 1933-D, 450th Anniversary of Martin Luther's Birth, a superb lustrous gem mint state example, PCGS graded MS65, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." Altho technically an issue of Nazi Germany, the design makes no reference to the new regime and was probably prepared before Hitler took over. Though the size of a half dollar, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger five mark of the Weimar Republic such as the Goethe commemorative (Dav-974). This type was also minted at Karlsruhe (mintmark "G"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Berlin ("A") and Hamburg ("J"). It was accompanied by a two mark (KM 79).
Recorded mintage: 28,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 13.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, .401 troy oz ASW, 29 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-80, Y-79, J-353.
