Sincona sale 19, lot 495

This specimen was lot 495 in Sincona sale 19 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 550 (about US$689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "[Georgia.] Double Abaz 1822, Tiflis Mint, AK. Extremely fine-uncirculated and lustrous." This type is listed for Georgia 1804-33 while the region was a puppet state of the Russian empire, which eventually annexed it. The SCWC states that this coin is 0.917 fine silver, which seems improbable from the color. The double abaz was equal to forty kopeks.

Recorded mintage: 24,000 (including mintmaster AT).

Specification: 6.31 g, 0.917 fine silver (per the SCWC), this specimen 5.91 g.
