Sincona sale 78, lot 436

This specimen was lot 436 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$240 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Alexander I. 1801-1825, Half-Abaz 1822, Tiflis Mint, AK. 1.5 roubles according to Petrov. About very fine." This type is listed for Georgia 1804-05, 1820-33 while the region was a puppet state of the Russian empire, which eventually annexed it. The SCWC states that this coin is 0.917 fine silver, which seems improbable from the color. The assayer mark on this coin appears to be "AR" while "AK" appears in the literature; we attribute the discrepancy to a die break. The half abazi was equal to ten kopeks.

Recorded mintage: 1,000.

Specification: 1.58 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 1.38 g.

Catalog reference: KM 73, Bitkin 782 (R1).
