Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 23086

This specimen was lot 23086 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Genoa. 1/2 Scudo, 1671-ISS. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. A moderately struck and even gray toned coin featuring Madonna and child on the obverse. From the Jasmine Collection." This specimen was offered again as lot 24087 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it did not sell. This rare type was struck 1638-56, 1661-1725. It accompanied the scudo stretto (Dav-3901). Half scudi largi (KM 81.2) also exist and are distinguished by cherubs instead of stars on the obverse. Both types weigh the same.
