Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72432
SB1021-72432r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72432 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Geneva. Taler, 1723. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Displaying ample detail and consistent surfaces that are still appealing despite the handicap of some rub in the fields. A pair of obverse and reverse planchet flaws near the center of the flan are noted for completeness." The only thalers struck in Geneva in the eighteenth century are this type (1722-23) and a similar issue of 1721-22 (KM 66). Neither are common. The significance of the double-headed eagle is uncertain; it was the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire, which Geneva had left in 1648.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-1767, KM-69.
