Geneva 1722 thaler Dav-1767
This specimen was lot 1929 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 190 CHF (about US$217 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Taler 1722. Stadtwappen, darüber Gottesname in Strahlen. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler. Sehr schön." (Switzerland thaler of 1722. Obverse: city arms, above JEHOVAH in rays; reverse: crowned double headed eagle. Very Fine.)
The only thalers struck in Geneva in the eighteenth century are this type (1721-22) and a similar issue of 1722-23 (KM 69). Neither are common. The significance of the double-headed eagle is uncertain; it was the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire, which Geneva had left in 1648.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 26,80 g.
