Sincona sale 5, lot 39

This specimen was lot 39 in Sincona sale 5 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 24,000 CHF (about US$29,532 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Genf Écu 1721. Av. Genfer Wappenschild auf geschweifter Kartusche, darüber strahlende Sonne mit dem Christusmonogramm im Zentrum. Münzmeister Louis Marcombes (ohne Mzz.); Stempelschneider Jean Dassier. Rv. Gekrönter, doppelköpfiger Reichsadler. Schräg gerippter Rand mit zwei gegenläufigen Randsegmenten geprägt. Sehr selten. Nur 394 Exemplare geprägt. Minimale Justierspuren. Prachtexemplar von feinstem Stempelschnitt und herrlicher Patina. Fast FDC. Der Ecu von 1721 gehört zu den klasssichen Raritäten von Genf aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Er fehlt in den meisten Sammlungen. Bis heute sind nur wenige Exemplare bekannt. (Switzerland, canton of Geneva, écu of 1721. Obverse: city arms with radiant sun with Christ's monogram in the center; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Very rare, only 394 struck. Minimal adjustment marks, fully struck and beautifully toned, choice uncirculated. A classic rarity of Geneva from the 18th century, one of the finest known.)"

The only thalers struck in Geneva in the eighteenth century are this type (1721-22) and a similar issue of 1722-23 (KM 69). Neither are common. The significance of the double-headed eagle is uncertain; it was the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire, which Geneva had left in 1648.
