Geneva 1659-AC thaler Dav-4621
The first specimen was lot 3247 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Genf/Genève, Stadt und Kanton, Taler (Ecu) 1659, Genf. Mzz. AC. Jahreszahl umgeschnitten aus 1657. Selten. Fast sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Zuberbühler, Auktion SINCONA 16, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 5428. Es scheint, dass sich der betreffende Schrötlingsfehler in Form eines Lochs bereits vor der Prägung gezeigt hat und dieses noch vor dem Schlagen der Münze mit Silber aufgefüllt wurde, denn Details, wie die innere, doppelte Kreislinie sind auf der Rückseite auch an dieser Stelle gut sichtbar. Eine zweite aufgefüllte Stelle ist ebenfalls erkennbar. (Switzerland, canton of Geneva, thaler or écu of 1659, Geneva mint. Rare, About Very Fine. It appears that the planchet defect in question appeared in the form of a hole before minting and was filled with silver before the coin was struck, as details such as the inner double circular line are clearly visible on the reverse at this location as well. A second filled area is also visible.)"
The second specimen was lot 4255 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$2,176 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Genf/Genève, Stadt und Kanton, Taler (Ecu) 1659/57, Genf. Jahreszahl im Stempel geändert aus 1657. Mzz. AC (ligiert). Selten. Schön-sehr schön. Avers bearbeitet und leicht gereinigt. (Switzerland, canton of Geneva, thaler of 1659, Geneva mint, 1659/7 overdate. Rare, Fine-Very Fine, Obverse tooled and slightly cleaned.)"
This is the final date of a type first struck in 1620 but only the 1622 and 1623 are reasonably available. Several overdates exist for this year, this one being 1659/7.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.
Specifications: 28 g, silver, 40 mm diameter, the first specimen 27.40 g, the second specimen 27.81 g.
