Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 1737

This specimen was lot 1737 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €400 (about US$500 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

" NEDERLAND, GELDERLAND, Provincie, AR Nederlandse 2 gulden, 1694. Vz/ Nederlandse maagd leunend op een bijbel op een altaar. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen tussen de waarde. Zeldzaam Zwak op vz. Mooie patina. goede Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Gelderland, two gulden of 1694. Obverse: the Dutch maid leans on an altar; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality. Scarce, nice patina, good Very Fine.)"

The SCWC lists a half gulden, one gulden and three gulden for 1694 but lists this as a forty stuivers altho it is clearly marked "2 GL". The denomination was struck 1694-96 and then abandoned.

Recorded mintage: 14,615 (including with and without unicorn privy mark).

Specification: 21.21 g, 0.920 fine silver, this specimen 20,91 g.
