Áureo y Calicó sale 391, lot 1248

This specimen was lot 1248 in Aureo y Calicó sale 391 (Barcelona, June 2022), where it sold for €170 (about US$214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1562. Felipe II. Gueldres. 1/2 escudo. Raya en reverso. Rara. MBC. (duchy of Gelderland, Philip II, half daalder of 1562. Scratch on reverse, rare, very fine.)"

The Philip II depicted here is Philip II of Spain (1556-98), who lost control of Gelderland in the 1580's when the Protestant inhabitants successfully rebelled against his attempts to reimpose Catholicism. In the southern Netherlands (Brabant and Luxembourg), this coin was called the demi-écu philippe.
