Sincona sale 35, lot 5145

This specimen was lot 5145 in Sincona sale 35 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 34,000 CHF (about US$40,360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Freiburg/Fribourg | Stadt, Goldgulden 1599. Fribourger Wappen mit nach links blickendem Adler. Rv. Ankerkreuz. In der Umschrift die letzten beiden Ziffern der Jahreszahl "99". Von grosser Seltenheit. Fast vorzüglich. Minimal gewellt. (city of Fribourg, goldgulden of 1599. Obverse: city walls, eagle to right; reverse: floriate cross, date written as "99". Of the highest rarity, About extremely fine, Lightly wavy planchet.)"

Friedberg calls this a florin, struck 1591 and 1597-99, rather than a ducat. It may well be, as it is a little light for a true ducat. It is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.24 g.

Catalog reference: MCV 25c, HMZ 2-255f, Fr-237.
