French Indochina 1931 piastre
The first specimen was lot 3582 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH INDO-CHINA. Piastre, 1931. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Some areas of toning on outer rim. Very bright and lustrous surfaces with claims to a higher grade." This piastre was issued for French Indochina in 1931. Altho reduced in size from the type of 1895-1928 (KM 5a.1), it is the last silver piastre issued for the colony. French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in 1940. French attempts to reoccupy the area after World War Two were defeated by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh in 1954. The colony was divided into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
