This piastre was issued for French Indochina in 1947. It is the last piastre issued for the colony. It exists with reeded edge (shown here) and security edge (scarce). French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in 1940. French attempts to reoccupy the area after World War Two were defeated by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh in 1954. The colony was divided into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Recorded mintage: 261,000 struck with security edge and 54,480,000 struck with reeded edge (shown here).

Specification: copper-nickel, 34.5 mm diameter.
