French Indochina 1928-A 20 cent
This specimen was lot 32208 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $517. The catalog description[1] noted, "French Colony 20 Cents 1928-A MS66 NGC, Paris mint. An attractive example of this popular type with silvery-gray patination accented by muted pastel hues. Undoubtedly, among the finest known for this elusive date." This twenty cent piece is one of a type issued for French Indochina during 1921-30. French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in 1940. French attempts to reoccupy the area after World War Two were challenged by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, leading to French defeat and withdrawal in 1954. The colony was divided into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
