French Equatorial Africa 1943 5 centimes
This specimen was lot 30790 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "French Colony aluminum-bronze 5 Centimes 1943 MS63 NGC, Pretoria mint, A very rare issue, struck during World War II, and never released into circulation, with only a handful avoiding the melting pots and making their way into collector's cabinets. This is only the second example we have offered (that example selling in 2008 for $805), with overall pleasing surfaces and a touch of striking softness near the date. From the F.P. Briand Collection." This type is accompanied by similar ten and twenty five centimes, also rare.
