French Colonies 1721-H 9 deniers
This specimen was lot 99289 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV 9 Deniers 1721-H VF25 Brown NGC, La Rochelle mint, A clean-looking example with milk-chocolate-brown patina and darker accents that grip the devices." This type was struck at Rouen (mintmark "B") and La Rochelle in 1721-22 for the use of the French Colonies in the Caribbean, altho they also circulated in the English islands. At that time, the islands were a major source of the world's sugar and were enormously profitable. Today, these coins are collected as part of the Canadian colonial series but it seems unlikely many ended up there.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
