Künker sale 354, lot 5766

This specimen was lot 5766 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKFURT, STADT, Silberabschlag von den Stempeln des Ku.-Hellers 1837. RR Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, city of Frankfurt, off metal strike in silver of a copper heller of 1837. Very rare, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in copper 1814-25, 1836-37. We don't know what prompted this off metal strike.

Recorded mintage: 144,000.

Specification: 1.65 g, copper, this specimen 2.64 g.
