France L'AN 8-A 2 decimes
The first specimen was lot 43309 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE. Consulate. Silver 2 Décimes Essai (Pattern), Year 8-A (1799/1800). Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. Fluted edge. By P.-J. Lorthior. Mostly olive-gray throughout, with an abundance of shimmering brilliance in the fields. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Émile Bourgey on 5 January 1956)."
The second specimen was lot 43312 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE. Consulate. Silver 2 Décimes Essai (Pattern), Year 8-A (1799/1800). Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. Fluted edge. By P.-J. Lorthior. A rather exquisite and RARE specimen, this minor pattern presents a subtle cobalt and aquamarine hue that blends rather seamlessly with the light gunmetal gray nature. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Florange in September 1954). Ex: Marcel Baille Collection (Jules Florange & Cie FPL - 9/1954) Lot # 450."
We don't know if these designs ever had a serious chance of being adopted. The only denominations struck in year 8 were the five centimes, the décime and the five francs.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 2.37 g, the second specimen 1.61 g.
