France L'AN5-I decime

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This type was struck An 5 to An 9 (1796-1801) in France in large quantities (Le Franc^[1] estimates nearly 98 million for the series) but is very rare in nice condition. Many were hurriedly struck on bad planchets and saw long and heavy wear; collectors of the day scorned copper coinage and few were saved. This specimen is a product of the Limoges mint. The mintmark is not visible but the rose bloom privy mark is. It was remanufactured from a double décime and is quite a bit more valuable as such.

Recorded mintage: 1,071,104 restruck plus 2,723,223 on new blanks.
