Jean Elsen sale 139, lot 954

This specimen was lot 954 in Jean Elsen sale 139 (Brussels, December 2018), where it sold for €235 (about US$314 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Cinquième République (1959-), AV 50 euro, 2013. Grands navires français. La Gloire. Ecrin et certificat n° 272. Titre 0,920. Flan poli. (France, Fifth republic, 1959-, gold fifty euro of 2013, on the grand ships of France: La Gloire. Box and certificate included. Proof.)"

The treaty which established the euro in 1999 gave specifications for the one cent thru two euro coins which are legal tender throughout the European Union. Higher denominations are not legal tender and each country is free to issue commemoratives as it sees fit, a right the Paris mint has ruthlessly exploited. This gold coin, one of a series celebrating famous French ships, was accompanied by a five ounce silver NCLT (KM 1777).

Recorded mintage: 1,000.

Specification: 8.45 g, .920 fine gold, 22 mm diameter, .250 troy oz AGW, this specimen 8,45 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1776, Fr-970.
