Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 20161

This specimen was lot 20161 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Gold 20 Centimes Piefort, 1962. Paris Mint. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Dramatically cameoed with almost no imperfections visible to the naked eye. VERY RARE in this quality with this piece being tied with one other for the finest certified. From the Naples Bay Collection." This specimen is a gold piedfort struck for collectors and insiders. The regular issue is a common date of a type struck at the Paris mint 1962-2001. Some of the later dates, such as 1998, 1999 and 2001, are only available from FDC sets. This type was accompanied by a similar five, ten and fifty centimes.

Recorded mintage: 48,200,000 plus 20 struck in gold.

Specification: 4 g, aluminum-bronze, 23.5 mm diameter, designed by Henri Lagriffoul (1907-81) and Adrien Dieudonné (1912-82).
