France 1960 franc rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen was lot 20158 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Gold Franc Piefort, 1960. Paris Mint. NGC PROOF-64. A RARE early issue from the Piefort series in gold. A few meandering hairlines determine the grade. From the Naples Bay Collection." While this gold piedfort, struck for collectors and insiders, is rare, the regular nickel type is very common. It was struck 1960-2001. Surprisingly, this date is rather expensive in choice condition, suggesting carelessness in production.

Recorded mintage: 406,375,000 plus 20 struck in gold.

Specification: 6 g, nickel, 24 mm diameter, after a design by Oscar Roty (1846-1911).

Catalog reference: F.226/4, KM 925.1, KM-PE329 (gold).
