France 1962 50 centimes
This specimen was lot 3577 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,702.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 50 Centimes, 1962. Paris Mint. NGC PROOF-68 ULTRA CAMEO. Piefort in gold. The only year minted. Finest certified specimen. 50 Centimes design." This type was demonetized in 1965 to make way for the superseding nickel half franc. As the old fifty francs was not retired until 1966, that means this type did not survive as long as its predecessor. This date comes in "three fold" and "four fold" varieties, referring to the front of Mlle Liberté's gown.
Recorded mintage: 37,560,000 plus 50 in silver and 20 in gold.
Specification: 7 g, aluminum bronze, 25 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-P352 (in gold), KM 939 (in aluminum bronze).
