France 1871A 2 francs rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 438 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $133.10. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE, Le Gouvernement de la Défense Nationale. 1870-1871. AR 2 Francs. Paris mint; différents: bee and anchor. Désiré-Albert Barre, engraver general. Renouard de Bussière, director. Dated 1871 A. Large A variety. In NGC encapsulation graded UNC DETAILS/Surface Hairlines. Nice deeply toned uncirculated with minor hairlines on reverse." This specimen is a better date of a series struck 1870-95 during the Third Republic of France. Small "A" and large "A" (shown here) mintmarks exist, with the small "A" given a slight premium. Unlike the 1870-A and 1871-K, which come both with and without the reverse legend, this date is only available with the legend. This "Cérès head" design is a revival of a type struck 1849-51 during the Second Republic. It was superseded by the "Semeuse" type of 1898-1920. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 4,709,003[2].

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, .289 troy oz AGW, 27 mm diameter, reeded edge, the first specimen Ø26 mm, 10.02 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: VG 530; KM 817.1, F.265/3.
