France 1869-BB 100 francs
This specimen is the second commonest date of a series struck 1862-70 during the régime of Napoleon III of France. All 97 thousand were struck at the Paris (mintmark "A") and Strasbourg (mintmark "BB") mints. The type appears fairly frequently in auctions, usually in XF-AU. The 1870-A is very rare. This type is commonly called the "Laureate head" and is very nearly the weight of a United States twenty dollar gold piece. After the collapse of Napoleon's empire during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, it was superseded by the "Génie" type of 1878-1906. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.
Recorded mintage: 14,412.
Specification: 32.25 g, 0.900 fine gold, 35 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Albert Désiré Barré (1818-1878).
