France SB819-22554r.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 22554 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), which sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 20 Centimes Trio (3 Pieces), 1867. Napoleon III. All NGC or IGC Certified. 1) 1867-A. IGC MS-64. Paris Mint. KM-808.1; 2-3) 1867-BB. NGC MS-66. Strasbourg Mint." This tiny coin was struck at Strasbourg under the régime of Napoleon III (1852-70). It is a common date of a type struck 1867-68. This type is distinguished from the earlier type (F.149) of 1853-63 by an increase in diameter from 15 to 16 millimeters. The denomination does not seem to have been popular, as no more were struck for circulation until 1941. Unlike previous types, the fineness was only .835. It was demonetized in 1918.

Recorded mintage: 3,114,264.

Specification: 1 g, 0.835 fine silver, 16 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: F.150/2, KM-808.2.
