Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1195

This specimen was lot 1195 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €550 (about US$686 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AV 50 francs, 1867 A, Paris. Petits coups sur la tranche. presque Superbe. (France, Napoleon III (1852-70), gold fifty francs of 1867, Paris mint. Small rim nicks, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1862-68 at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the previous "bare head" fifty francs of Napoleon III. Most specimens trade for a little more than their bullion value. This is a common date.

Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE.

Recorded mintage: unknown[1], but a common date.

Catalog reference: F.548/8, KM 804.1, Gad-1112; Fr-582.
