France 1847-A franc
The first specimen was lot 1143 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €75 (about US$94 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), AR 1 franc, 1847 A, Paris. presque Superbe. (France, Louis-Philippe (1830-48), silver one of 1847, Paris mint, almost extremely fine.)"
This issue, from the Paris mint, is from a type struck 1832-48. This design, by Domard, replaced the Tiolier bust type struck 1831 only. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 118 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. The entire production run, 1832-48, totaled about 18.1 million pieces. The production of five franc pieces in the same period was 289 million.
Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge. Designed by Joseph François Domard, 1792-1858.
Recorded Mintage: 2,299,863[1] (the most common date).
