France 1834Q 5 francs rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 32790 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis Philippe I 5 Francs 1834-Q MS64 NGC, Perpignan mint. A generally more elusive mint for Louis Philippe's coinage, rarely found in this near-gem state, a captivating luminosity in the fields revealing flints of iridescence in the darker tones portions of the fields." The silver five francs of Louis Philippe (1830-48) were issued in massive quantities from numerous mints. Le Franc[2] estimates a total of 335 million were made, counting all sub-types. This issue, from the Perpignan mint, is scarce. A complete set of this middle sub-type (1832-44) comprises 102 date and mintmark combinations, some quite scarce. All silver five francs were officially recalled in 1928 but ceased to circulate after World War I. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents. The Perpignan mint was closed in January 1835 and there is no known coinage dated 1835-Q, so this is the final issue.

Recorded mintage: 981,517[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: F.324/40, Dav-91; Gad-678, KM 749.11.
