This specimen was lot 1558 in Jean Elsen sale 116 (Brussels, March 2013), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$2,125 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe Ier (1830-1848), AR 1/2 franc, 1834 MA, Marseille. Extrêmement Rare. Petit coup sur la tranche. Belle patine. presque Superbe (kingdom of France, Louis Philippe (1830-48), silver half franc of 1834, Marseille mint. Extremely rare, small rim nick, nice patina, almost extremely fine.)"

This dime-sized coin was struck at Marseilles under the régime of king Louis Philippe of France (1830-48). It is from a type struck 1831-45. All half francs of this reign are of this type, which is common. It was replaced in 1845 by a fifty centimes piece (F.183) and demonetized in 1869. The catalog[1] notes 114 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is rare, being priced twenty times the commonest date (1841A, 1842B or 1845B).

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge. Designed by Joseph François Domard, 1792-1858.
