closeup of the date

The first specimen was lot 74753 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/20 Ecu (6 Sols), 1733-(9). Rennes Mint. Louis XV. PCGS VF-30. From the Richard August Collection." This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's. Many more dates are known than are listed in the SCWC, which mentions 1729-33 for this mint. The twentieth écu was the ancien régime version of a half dime tho never struck in sufficient numbers to really convert France to a decimal currency.

Recorded mintage: 23,904, a scarce date[2].

Specification: 1.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 856, KM-481.24; Gad-283.
