Heritage sale 61352, lot 22137

This specimen was lot 22137 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $2,220. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV Ecu 1732-Q MS63 PCGS, Perpignan mint. An incredible example of a Louis XV Ecu exhibiting a brilliant, icy metallic-silver sheen accented with russet toning among some of the raised motifs, which adds a nice aura of originality." This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Recorded mintage: 82,469, a somewhat better date.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
