Künker Auction 439, lot 2064

This specimen was lot 2064 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €8,250 (about US$11,350 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH Louis XV, 1715-1774. 1/2 Louis d'or aux deux L 1722 K, Bordeaux. Büste r. mit Lorbeerkranz//Gekröntes Doppelmonogramm "L", in den Winkeln je eine Lilie. GOLD. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit hübschem Prägeglanz, min. Überprägungsspuren, vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, half louis d'or of the two "L's" of 1722, Bordeaux mint. Obverse: laureate bust right; reverse: crowned double monogram cantonned with lilies. Very rare, very attractive example with handsome gold toning, traces of the undertype visible, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1720-23 during the John Law period and all dates are rare. This is the first example of this type that we have posted. This type was superseded by the demi-louis d'or Mirliton, palmes longues, struck 1723-25. That coin in turn was superseded by the demi-louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 4.89 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 4,85 g.
