France 1722-A ecu

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70454

This specimen was lot 70454 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1722-A. Paris Mint. Louis XV. NGC AU-58. A well struck Ecu, showing strong evidence of the undertype, with abundant field luster and attractive deep toning throughout." An écu au grand écusson de France of the Paris mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers^[2] notes the type as rather scarce but more available than the succeeding écu aux 8 L of 1724-25. The type was issued 1720-24.

Reported Mintage: unknown but all on "reformed" blanks; a common date.

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
