France 1713X ecu rev JElsen 87-2121.jpg

Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) of France struck at the Amiens mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. It was lot 2121 in Jean Elsen sale 87 (Brussels, March 2006), where it sold for 220 euro. This is last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 écus struck during this period with this design. Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
