Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74688

This specimen was lot 74688 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1713-(9). Rennes Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS VF-30. From the Richard August Collection." Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) of France struck at the Rennes mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 écus struck during this period with this design.

Recorded mintage: 536,927, a common date[2].

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
