Sincona sale 59, lot 1361

This specimen was lot 1361 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$182 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/20 Ecu aux trois couronnes 1712 T, Nantes. Selten. Sehr schön. Leicht justiert. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, twentieth écu of the three crowns of 1712, Nantes mint. Rare, Very fine, Minor adjustment marks.)"

This diminutive coin, called a vingtième d'écu aux trois couronnes, was the French equivalent of a half dime. This coin was originally tariffed at 4 sols 7½ deniers, then 5 sols, then 3 sols 6 deniers in 1715. After the reform of 1726, the 1/20 écu = 6 sols. The type was struck 1710-15. It was superseded by the vingtième d'écu vertugadin of Louis XV in 1716.

Recorded mintage: 110,733, a common date of a scarce type.

Specification: 1.53 g, 0.917 fine silver, 16-19.5 mm diameter, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 1.44 g.
