France 1712-N 6 deniers
This piece de six deniers dite "dardenne" was struck at the Montpellier mint (mintmark "N", shown here), La Rochelle (mintmark "H") and Aix en Provence (mintmark "&") 1710-12. This type was designed to consume locally mined copper along with scrap bronze and brass from cannons from the naval arsenals in Toulon and Marseilles and pay off soldiers serving there. Eighty million pieces were authorized and at least 58 million were struck, so the type is common. The second specimen was lot 10215 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 6 Deniers, 1712-N. NGC MS-64 BN. Louis XIV (1643-1715). Lightly toned with mint luster in the protected areas. From the Demarete Collection." The third specimen was part of lot 29050 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), which sold for $384. The catalog description[2] noted, "Pair of Louis XIV 6 Deniers ("Dardennes"), ...2) 1712-N AU Details (Corrosion) NGC, Montellier mint. Medium to dark brown with granularity of past corrosion. Nevertheless, a well-centered, spectacular example of the type. The finest we've seen. From the Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens."
