Sedwick Treasure Auction 39, lot 1119
Sedwick 39-1119r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1119 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE, Lyon mint, gold louis d’or à la tête nu[e], Louis XIV, 1681-D, PCGS MS63, finest known in PCGS census. Bold strike with full rims, nice luster, rich gold color, the finest at PCGS with none at NGC, rated R in Gadoury, a very choice coin for this period, characterized by the "Sun King's" growing rivalry with the English in the New World." Droulers[2] mentions this bust for Lyon for 1673, 1678-83 and notes this date as fairly common for the type. The tête virile was used at the various mints from about 1673 to about 1687, when a laureate head was reintroduced. The majority were restruck in various "reformations" starting in 1690, accounting for their rarity today. A closely related variety (Dr/4 № 365), also known for this date, has a more youthful appearing bust but seems to lack the privy mark by the date.

Recorded mintage: 96,691, signalé mais non confirmé[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 24 mm diameter, plain edge, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by François Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 373, Dr/2 № 248, Gad-247; Dupl-1428; KM-219.3; Fr-423.
