Sincona sale 46, lot 342

This specimen was lot 342 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,040 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis dor à la tête virile 1680 A, Paris. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, louis d'or of the virile head of 1680, Paris mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

After some substantial mintages during the period 1646-53, the production of louis d'or dwindled until the great reminting of the 1690's. There are many fascinating types issued during the intervening period, all rare, including this one, the louis d'or à la tête virile, minted 1675-84. This particular date comes in several varieties; Dr/4 № 374 has a leaf over the king's head; Dr/4 № 376 has a star over the king's head and Dr/4 № 377 (shown here) has a palm frond over the king's head.

Reported Mintage: 169,050 (Dr/4 № 376) plus 287,799 (Dr/4 № 374 and 377).

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, 24 mm diameter, designed by François Warin; this specimen 6.75 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-425; Gadoury 249, Dr/4 № 377, Dr/2 № 244.
