France 1673-A louis d'or
This specimen was lot 24521 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $8,812.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIIII gold Louis d'Or 1673-A, MS64 NGC, a choice fully lustrous specimen with bold features and no adjustment marks or other flaws. Rarely seen in this deluxe grade." After some substantial mintages during the period 1646-53, the production of louis d'or dwindled until the great reminting of the 1690's. There are many fascinating types issued during the intervening period, all rare, including this one, the louis d'or juvénile, minted in France 1659-83.
Recorded mintage: approx. 89,529[2].
Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
Catalog reference: KM 219.1, Dr/4 № 369, Dr/2 № 235.
