France 1677-A louis d'or
This specimen was lot 2753 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,543 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANKREICH, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. louis d'or à la tête virile 1677 A, Paris. Vorzüglich. Kleine Kratzer (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the virile head of 1677, Paris mint. Extremely fine, Small scratches)." After some substantial mintages during the period 1646-53, the production of louis d'or dwindled until the great reminting of the 1690's. There are many fascinating types issued during the intervening period, all rare due to the gold drought. This type was struck 1675-81.
Recorded mintage: 16,660.
Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge; this specimen 6.74 g.
