This specimen was lot 13166 in Heritage sale 397 (New York, January 2006), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1672A New Juvenile Bust, superb UNC, very light toning over full mint bloom and problem-free surfaces. Very rare condition." After some substantial mintages during the period 1646-53, the production of louis d'or dwindled until the great reminting of the 1690's. There are many fascinating types issued during the intervening period, all rare, including this one, the louis d'or juvénile, minted 1659-83.
Recorded mintage: approx. 20,000[2].
Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
Catalog reference: KM 219.1, Dr/4 № 369, Dr/2 № 235.
