France 1655 liard

CNG Lissner sale, lot 253

This specimen was lot 253 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,573. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XIV le Roi Soleil (the Sun King). 1643–1715. BI Liard à la croiz du Saint-Esprit. Lyon mint. Dated 1655. In NGC encapsulation graded AU 55. Choice toned about UNC. A very rare one year type that is almost never seen or offered. Purchased from A. H. Baldwin & Sons, August 1970." This type is listed in Droulers for 1655-56 to displace billon liards minted in Dombes and Orange, regions outside of France and beyond the king's jurisdiction. It was not a success and the coin is now rare.

Specification: 0.61 g, .104 fine silver, 13 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Isaac Briot, this specimen 15 mm diameter, 0.66 g, 6h axis.
