CNG Lissner sale, lot 259

This specimen was lot 259 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $217.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XIV le Roi Soleil (the Sun King). 1643–1715. AR Douzième d’écu à la mèche lo[ngu]e. Lyon mint; différents: lozenge and star/rose. Dated 1657 D. In NGC encapsulation graded AU 58. Lightly toned AU with good portrait. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, March 1975." The specimen shown is a twelth écu à la mèche longue struck at Lyon during the reign of Louis XIV. Droulers[2] prices this date about 50% more than the common 1658-N.

Specification: 2.28 g, 0.917 fine silver, 20 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by J. Warin, this specimen 20 mm diameter, 2.25 g, 6h axis.
