SB925-74720r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74720 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Liard, 1655-D. Lyon Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS AU-58. From the Richard August Collection." This liard was struck at Vimy, not Lyon, the usual holder of this mintmark. This type was struck 1655-58 by private contractors on Mazarin's orders to alleviate a cash crunch. After it was rejected by the populace, Colbert reduced its value to 1½ deniers.

Recorded mintage: 18,313,600 reported but likely higher[2].

Specification: 4.07 g, copper, 22-23 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 784, KM-192.5; Gad-80.
